Maternity Session at Coney Island – When the Storm Can’t Stop the Love
Some sessions are about perfect timing. Others are about perfect people—and this one was the latter.
We recently had the joy of photographing a maternity session for a truly beautiful family we’re honored to know personally. Both parents are physicians we’ve worked with before (click here)—dedicated professionals with the kindest hearts, and now, growing their own family once again.
The plan was to capture their maternity session at the iconic Coney Island boardwalk—Wonder Wheel, Thunderbolt, ocean breeze, the works. But Mother Nature had a different plan. The wind picked up, the skies opened up, and we found ourselves in the middle of what felt like a movie scene, minus the soundtrack (unless you count umbrellas flipping inside out!).
And just when we thought it couldn’t get any more eventful… my softbox—a loyal companion of 25 years—caught the wind and went down. It broke. After two and a half decades, it was its final session. We all burst out laughing, because what else can you do in a moment like that?
Yet, through it all, this amazing couple didn’t flinch. With warmth, grace, and great humor, they embraced the chaos. We improvised, adapted, and pushed through—just like life often requires us to do. And in the end, we created magic.
Despite the wild weather and gear setbacks, we captured moments full of strength, love, and connection. Big brother was full of smiles, eagerly awaiting his new sibling, and it was such a joy to document this chapter for them.
This session reminded us that beauty isn’t about perfection—it’s about presence, resilience, and heart. Rain or shine, love always shines through.
